The finance leader who builds

I'm Tuan, a finance and AI transformation leader based in Switzerland. I lead FP&A at Fadata, a multinational B2B insurtech company: forecasts, budgets, Board reporting and the conversations that follow.

Finance teams spend most of their time preparing numbers and too little acting on them. So I build the systems that change that, combining a decade of finance with hands-on AI and software engineering, deepened through the CAS at ETH Zürich. I care about clear numbers that lead to decisions, practical tools people actually use, and finance that helps leaders steer the business.

From financial strategy to working AI systems

Three projects, built in sequence, each one a building block for the next. Each case shows the business problem, the solution, the architecture and the benefit it targets.

01 · Build firstIn build

CRM to finance automation

A closed deal updates the forecast and the report by itself.

Problem
Closed deals reach the forecast late, via manual exports.
Solution
D365 triggers n8n; Python validates and updates the forecast.
Benefit
Same-day forecast, fewer reconciliation errors.

D365 Closed-Won → n8n trigger → Python validation → Forecast update → Report refresh

02 · Build secondPlanned

Finance knowledge assistant

Ask a finance question, get an answer with its source.

Problem
Policies and KPI definitions are scattered; answers drift.
Solution
RAG over finance documents, citing the exact policy.
Benefit
Consistent answers, faster onboarding.

Policies & KPI docs → Chunk & embed → Vector DB → LLM answer → Cited sources

03 · FlagshipPlanned

Multi-agent virtual FP&A team

AI agents that work like a small FP&A team.

Problem
Explaining a variance takes days, so decisions come late.
Solution
An orchestrator directs data, variance, forecast and reporting agents.
Benefit
An EBITDA miss explained and summarised within an hour.

Orchestrator → Data + Variance + Forecast agents → Reporting agent → Human review

Impact

Finance work that changed how the business is steered. Automation only helps when the model, the data and the governance underneath are solid.

Profitability

Delivery margin turnaround

Traced a decline in delivery margins to subcontractor costs, reworked resource pricing and shifted capacity to in-house delivery teams.

Modelling

Integrated three-statement model

Planning and forecasting model linking income statement, balance sheet and cash flow to operational drivers in Sales, Delivery, HR and Product.

Leadership reporting

Board and executive reporting

Monthly and quarterly packs built around a few decision-relevant numbers and the story behind them, across multiple entities.

Governance

CRM and pipeline governance

Rules for record ownership, data hygiene and naming in Dynamics 365, so the forecast starts from data people trust.

Reporting

Reporting transformation

Moved controlling and savings reporting from Excel to Power BI on Microsoft SQL Server, and automated manual steps in the controlling process.

Prototype

AI variance commentary

Turns an actual vs budget pack into a first draft of management commentary. It becomes the reporting agent in the multi-agent project.

Two numbers and one story

Why the best Board slide I ever made had almost nothing on it.

Read >

Most finance packs are built to prove that finance did its homework. Fifty lines, three variance columns, every number reconciled. Then the meeting starts, and the CEO asks one question that none of it answers.

I now build every executive update around a simple rule: two numbers and one story. The first number shows where we are. The second shows where we are heading. The story explains what changed and what we should do about it.

It sounds like less work. It is more. You have to decide what matters before the meeting, instead of hoping someone finds it in the appendix. But that decision is exactly the job of finance. The detail still exists, one click away, for anyone who wants it.

The test is easy. If a leader leaves the room and can repeat your two numbers and your story to their team, finance has done its job.

Your forecast is only as good as your CRM

Pipeline data quality is a finance problem, whether finance likes it or not.

Read >

Every revenue forecast I have seen fails in the same place: not in the model, but in the data that feeds it. Deals without owners, close dates that never move, stages that mean different things to different people.

For a long time I treated this as a sales operations topic. That was a mistake. If the forecast drives hiring, cash and Board expectations, then the quality of the pipeline is a finance risk.

What helped was simple governance. Every record has one owner. A small set of fields is mandatory before a deal can move forward. Naming follows one convention. Duplicates get merged, not ignored. None of this is exciting, and all of it is necessary.

Only then does automation make sense. A forecast that updates itself from bad data is just a faster way to be wrong.

AI in finance starts with the boring work

Clean definitions and clear processes beat clever models.

Read >

Everyone wants an AI agent that explains last month's results. Few teams can tell you, in one sentence, how they define recurring revenue or which version of the budget is the real one.

That is where AI projects in finance succeed or fail. A language model is very good at writing a variance comment. It is not good at guessing which of three conflicting definitions you meant.

So my order is always the same. First, agree the definitions and write them down. Second, make the process repeatable, so the same data arrives the same way every month. Third, automate the first draft, and keep a person responsible for the final word.

Done in that order, AI does not replace the finance team. It gives them back the days they used to spend preparing numbers, so they can spend them on what the numbers mean.

Beyond the numbers

Humongous fan of The Office.

Sport. I still play football when my body allows. Two years ago I picked up tennis, and I'm getting better at it.

Free time. You'll find me on a hiking trail in the Alps, wandering around Asia, or sharing good food and a laugh with family and friends.

Fun fact

At 13 I played football professionally and was nominated to represent Vietnam regionally. The academic side won after all.
